iWave Plasma Generators — How Bipolar Ionization Works

Indoor air quality · iWave-R

Baptist Heating & Air has installed quite a few plasma generators in homes across Central Indiana. Customers ask us how they work, whether they really do anything, and whether they need maintenance. Here's the straight answer.

What "Plasma" Actually Means in This Context

In its simplest form, plasma is oppositely charged hydrogen and oxygen ions — what's called bipolar ionization. These ions occur naturally in the outdoors, especially after a thunderstorm or near a waterfall. The plasma generator artificially produces them by passing electricity through a specialized generator inside your HVAC duct.

How It Cleans the Air

Positive ions form around viral cells and "steal" the hydrogen the virus needs to survive. Without that hydrogen, the virus is effectively neutralized. The ions also bind to dust, allergens, and smoke particles — making them larger and easier for your standard filter to catch. They neutralize odors at the molecular level rather than just masking them.

The iWave product line produces three different types of ions to address different air quality concerns. It's been tested against common pathogens including the flu virus, MRSA, E. coli, and more.

What Makes the iWave-R Different

The big practical advantage of the iWave-R model: it's self-cleaning. There are no replacement parts. No filters to change. No maintenance calls. Once it's installed in your duct work, it does its job and stays out of your way.

That matters because plenty of indoor air quality products require frequent maintenance to keep working. UV bulbs need replacement every year or two. Media filters need replacing. Humidifier pads need annual replacement. The iWave-R just runs.

Where We Install It

The iWave mounts inside the supply plenum or return duct of your HVAC system. It runs whenever your blower runs — so it treats every cubic foot of air that circulates through your home. Installation typically takes about an hour for an experienced technician.

Is It Right for Your Home?

The iWave is a good fit if you want comprehensive whole-home air treatment without the maintenance overhead. Especially worth considering if:

  • Someone in the home has asthma or seasonal allergies
  • You have pets and want to reduce dander and odors
  • You cook with strong-smelling foods and want odors gone faster
  • You're concerned about airborne viruses and pathogens

It pairs especially well with a good media filter or with an AccuClean whole-home electronic air cleaner for layered air quality protection.
